CONSTURCTION SITE AND CRIMINALITY

Abuja, Dec. 3, 2013 (NAN) An Abuja Grade 2 Area Court in Kado on Tuesday sentenced five workers of Vital Construction Company, Jabi in the FCT to seven months in prison for stealing a drum of diesel, valued at N37,950.
Those sentenced are Gayus Maji,28, Zamani Billy,45; Zakariya Bahago,35; Emmanuel Ajie,40, and Zakari Musa, 50.
The Presiding Judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, sentenced the convicts, after they pleaded guilty to the two counts of joint act and theft.
Ado who gave them an option to pay a fine of N10,000 each, warned that the next time they appeared before any court for another crime, they would not get an option to pay a fine.
``Why don't you people go and engage your brains in something positive and stay away from life of crimes.
``The next time you appear before me or any other court for that matter, you will not get an option to pay a fine,'' he warned.
Earlier, after they pleaded guilty, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Buba Irimiya, prayed the court to convict them summarily under Section 157(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The code states: ``if the accused admits that he has committed the offence of which he is accused, his admission shall be recorded as nearly as possible in the words used by him and if he shows no sufficient cause why he should not be convicted the court may convict him accordingly.’’
Irimiya told the court that a report was lodged against the accused persons at the Utako Police Station by one Christian Onuoha, working with Vital Construction Company, Jabi, Abuja, on Nov. 30.
He said the convicts formed a common intention and syphoned a drum of diesel, valued at N37,950 and during investigation, the drum of diesel was recovered from the convicts.
Irimiya said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
