GOVT. TO JAIL THOSE SPOILING ROADS

Residents who damage roads to face prosecution

People who indulge in activities that cause damage to roads will soon be prosecuted, the Executive Chairman, Lagos State Public Works Corporation, Mr. Gbenga Akintola, has said.
Akintola said the corporation was working with the task force on environmental sanitation to monitor the environment in an attempt to arrest on the spot anyone caught in the act of damaging road infrastructure and prosecute them as provided in the environmental sanitation law.
He said the enforcement activities would soon commence, while any case of prosecution would be publicised so as to deter others from engaging in such acts.
The executive chairman added that efforts were also being intensified to inculcate proper road usage conduct in children with a view to teaching them the right attitude to protecting the roads and making them agents of change.
According to Akintola, about 1,400 roads have been earmarked for maintenance in 2014 as against the 988 attended to last year, adding that the corporation would also provide coverings for 350 manholes and gratings compared to 251 in the previous year.
He said the feat would be achieved with the take-off of two new 160-tonne per hour asphalt plants in Imota and Badagry.
“The modest achievements of yesteryears are considered as mere stepping stones towards covering the gap between where we are and where we want to be. This underlines the new targets set for 2014, which are already on course,” he said.
The LSPWC boss stated that through the paving stone factories of the corporation, 33,120 square metres of interlocking paving stones would be produced this year as against the 26,840 square metres for 2013.
