Several indices justify the World Bank’s recent claim that 100 million Nigerians live in destitution, SAMUEL AWOYINFA writes
A graduate, Kolade Ijiwunmi, completed his first degree in 2008. He did his one year national youth service in a private company in Yaba, Lagos. But Ijiwunmi is not as lucky as a few of his colleagues. He was not retained after the service. Thus, his search for an employment began.
After almost two years search for employment without any headway, both in public and private sectors, he began to think of other ways to get engaged. Ijiwunmi is now a popular face at building construction sites.

Brazil: Blatter Sends Message To Nigeria

Date Posted: 30/11/2013

The former Vice president of NFF was in Warri to deliver the message of FIFA President, Sepp Blatter and CAF President Isa Hayatou to the General Congress of the FA yesterday.
Amanze, a member of FIFA Statutes Committee and who is well respected for his knowledge of the game, delivered goodwill messages from Hayatou and Blatter to the packed-full congress. His gesticulation and manner of delivery excited the delegates.
Amanze said that Blatter recalled the drama at the VIP box in China during the Olympics soccer semi final event between Nigeria and Belgium. Hayatou, the CAF President and Michel Platini, the UEFA President, were seated for the game and before Blatter boasted so much about the outcome that they challenged each other with a betting on who will win.
Hayatou boasted about Africa’s representative Nigeria and Platini gave the match to Belgium. Blatter was not only a witness but also the arbiter in the betting. When Nigeria scored the first goal, Hayatou moved over to Platini and said “I told you! Second goal came, he moved over and said “I told you.”
When Nigeria scored the fourth goal, Hayatou yelled to Platini, “it is finished.” Blatter, according to Uchegbulam recalled that drama and said they should tell the delegates to ensure that Eagles do well in the World Cup so that they can all recall the China drama.
Amanze recalled that the message to Nigeria in 2011 Congress was for peace to reign in our football, following the many litigations that the NFF was going through. In Port Harcourt in the last Congress, peace had returned.
Then Amanze said that “this year the result of peace could be seen in the achievement recorded in the Nation Cup victory, world Cup qualification and the U-17 victory in UAE.
In his own remarks, NFF President, Aminu Maigari reeled out all the achievements and said that the ultimate for his board was to go to Brazil and put up a performance that no other Africa country has been able to achieve in the World Cup. And that would mean going beyond the quarter final.
Meanwhile, in the charity match, Enyimba defeated Kano Pillars 2-0.

More PDP Governors Plan to Join APC – Governor Okorocha

More PDP Governors Plan to Join APC – Okorocha

Rochas Okorocha, the Governor of Imo state, disclosed on November 29, 2013, Friday that more governors are on the verge of dumping the crisis-ridden People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gov. Okorocha commended the G-5 Governors for their courage. He also assured that the action of the governors will further strengthen the country’s democracy and midwife the much desired two party system.
While briefing the journalists at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, shortly after his arrival from Abuja, the Governor said that he had earlier predicted the “crossover” of the aggrieved governors to APC, adding that the country is now heading to a two party system which would create opportunity and freedom synonymous with healthy democracy.
Rochas Okorocha called for the total cancellation of Anambra State governorship election, adding that it was
marred by “noticeable irregularities.”

Why I must sue my parents

Why I must sue my parents

Azuka Onwuka
Please look at these scenarios and tell me if there is a reason for me not to sue my parents. If I were the son of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, by now I would have become the Babaloja of Lagos; and if I were female and his wife, I would have been a senator. If I were the son of Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, he would have made me his Special Adviser (Special Duties), so I could do “special” things for him. And if I were the son of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, I would have completed my tenure as a commissioner in Anambra State; and if I were his wife, I would be the current Nigerian ambassador to Spain.
Consequently, I have made up my mind to sue my parents. I will gather a team of lawyers for this purpose. The team must be made up of lawyers who are not moved by sentiments and emotions. My mother, who died in 2006, may have escaped it, but I may have to sue her brothers or my elder sister in lieu of her. The offence of my parents is simple and straight-forward: They did not hold top political posts in the land, thereby putting me at a disadvantage in everything.
If my father were former President Shehu Shagari, I would have held the office of the Minister of Water Resources from 2001 to 2007 before resigning to get elected as the deputy governor of Sokoto State in 2007. What if my parents were the former deputy premier of the Western Region, Chief Remi Fani-Kayode? President Olusegun Obasanjo would have made me his Special Assistant (public affairs); then he would have promoted me to be the Minister of Culture and Tourism, before capping it with the position of the Minister of Aviation. And if my father were the former leader of the National Democratic Coalition and Afenifere, Chief Abraham Adesanya, Obasanjo would have also made me the Minister of State for Defence (Navy) as well as the Minister of Solid Minerals Development.
What if I were the daughter of Chief Frederick Abiye Agama and the wife of a former military governor and Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Alison Madueke? I would have been a minister of three different ministries in six years: transport, mines and steel development, and petroleum resources. And if I were the son of the late Chief Bola Ige, I would have been made the Commissioner of Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development in Osun State. If I were the daughter of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, I would have been a member of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007, and then appointed the Executive Director (Corporate Services) of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation in 2012.
If I were the son of Senator Olusola Saraki, I would have governed Kwara State for eight years before going to the Senate. And if I were his daughter, I would have been a member of the House of Representatives in 1999, then a Senator in 2003 – the same time my brother was elected the governor of our state – before attempting fruitlessly to succeed my brother as governor in 2011 because my brother had other political plans of his own. What if I were the daughter of Chief Solomon Lar, I would have been a member of the House of Representatives. And if my father were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, I would have been a Senator from Ogun State.
I can go on and on, but I guess you can now see why I am extremely angry with my parents. If they could not win elections and become governors, senators or presidents, or they were not appointed ministers or ambassadors, why did they not join the army and execute a successful coup, or mingle with coup plotters and get some appointments in their juntas? That way, they would have amassed enormous wealth, and would have received national honours such as the CON, GCON, GCFR, with the attendant clout.
Some would ask me if all these children of the VIPs were not qualified for the political positions they held. Before answering that, let me ask them: who is not qualified to hold any position in Nigeria? You need just a secondary school certificate to be even the president, let alone other positions. So, you who are asking that question are qualified to be a minister, senator, governor, ambassador, commissioner or whatever. The disadvantage you have is that because your parents are unknown, you are lost in the crowd with the millions of others, while the children of the VIPs stand out because of their family name.
If my parents were in government, chances are that they would have many houses in Ikoyi, Victoria Island, GRA Ikeja, Asokoro, Maitama, London, New York, Dubai, Johannesburg, etc. I would not have to grow grey hair trying to raise money to buy some piece of land in some slum or engage in a one-year-one-block venture, all in the name of building a house. They would have had multiple accounts in some Swiss banks and other countries, and I could easily give someone N5m for “chewing gum.” As a child, I would have been chauffeur-driven to elitist schools in state-of-the-art cars instead of having to walk to the community schools that I attended under the rain and sunshine. I would also have attended Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge or MIT. With degrees from such institutions, companies and organisations would have been falling over themselves to have me within their fold. My wedding would have been attended by 15 governors, 20 Senators and the President. My siren would be loud and threatening enough to chase hapless Nigerians off the road even if I was going to cut my hair. Even if I walked into the church while the sermon was on, I would be ushered to the front seat in the church with my retinue of aides.
Yes, there are those in top political positions whose parents were not influential. But the snag is that it comes with a condition: While the children of the influential get things mostly without having to prove themselves, the children of the unknown have to prove themselves for every position they get. I had to prove myself to get into the university, to get a job, to get a wife, etc. I had to prove myself to hold a position in my town unions, societies, the church, etc. I even had to prove myself for a year before The PUNCH gave me this column. I am tired of proving myself at every turn. The number of hours I have used to prove myself, if invested in other ventures, would have yielded great fruits. If air were not free, I would have had to prove myself before I could get my air ration. Haba!
That is why I have to sue my parents. If I sue them and table my air-tight case before a judge, I am confident that I will be awarded at least a billion naira to compensate me for all the losses and disadvantage I have incurred for being the son of non-VIPs. That would teach other Nigerian parents a lesson: They must strive to be senators, governors or presidents or be doomed. That is what counts here. Welcome to Naija!

SHOCKING PHOTO: The Flying ‘Wizard’ Who Crash-Landed At Kasoa

SHOCKING PHOTO: The Flying ‘Wizard’ Who Crash-Landed At Kasoa

Date Posted: 28/11/2013

A man believed to be in his 70s, who claimed to.be a wizard, was on Wednesday found on the banks of the Okrudu River at Kaimebre, a settlement near the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region Ghana.
The man, who gave his name as Charles Atta, looked frail, pale and bore protruding breasts like that of a teenage girl.
His body was smeared with mud from the bank of the river where he was found by two brothers, Liberty Obeng and Innocent Obeng, who claimed they found the strange man crying for help.
The two brothers told Daily Guide reporters that the self-acclaimed wizard confessed to them that he was in the company of colleagues, including a medical doctor and were flying to Cape Coast for a meeting when he was forced down.
According to him, they were flying over a church where an all-night vigil was being held when he crash- landed at Servant Kings International School.
“When we as ked him where he was coming from, Atta told us that he was from Akuapem Akropong but was flying to Cape Coast to attend a meeting for witches and wizards,” he said.
Charles also confessed that the two puffy protrusions on his chest were breasts taken from his 16-year- old granddaughter and that he normally borrowed them for his night activities.
The two brothers said they were initially confused and bewildered by the weird sight of the man, and not knowing what to do him took him to Pink FM, a local radio station at Kasoa for help.
When the strange announcement was made on radio, hundreds of people besieged the premises of the radio station to see the suspected wizard.
Upon hearing the news, the Kasoa District Police dispatched a number of police personnel to the station to save the victim from being lynched.
Superintendent Samuel Tabril Punobyin told the paper that the police did not investigate spiritual matters and that the suspected wiz-ard could therefore not be charged.
He said the police would look for the family erf the man and hand him over to them. Charles Atta is still in the custody .of the Kasoa Police.

TOP RICHEST NOLLYWOOD ACTRESSES

TOP RICHEST NOLLYWOOD ACTRESSES

Four elements contribute to the success of a movie at the box-office. They include good script, experienced director, professional publicist, and most importantly, the big name stars.

Of all the four, there is one a producer should never violate at the market place and that is the ‘star’ aspect of it. There could be a bad script, inexperienced director and not too good publicity for the movie but it is almost impossible to have Return On Investment (ROI) with un-bankable stars.
Wikipedia defines a bankable star to be an actor famous or charismatic enough to be “capable of guaranteeing box-office success simply by showing up in a movie”. It is common knowledge that a Will Smith will sell any movie no matter how bad as long as he has his face on the jacket.
In Nigeria, some movie stars have proven again and again that they can guarantee return on investment as long as their faces adorn the poster. They are Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Omoni Oboli, Funke Akindele and Nse Ikpe-Etim. Or how else could one explain the success of box office hits like Mirror Boy, Ije, and Tango With Me all having Genevieve Nnaji starring in them? And what about Figurine and Anchor Baby which both starred Omoni Oboli as the lead actress?
Mirror Boy, Tango With Me, Last Flight to Abuja and Phone Swap all had sizeable negative reviews, yet they topped the box office, made huge profit and left many Hollywood movies far behind. Here, The Entertainer takes a look at Nollywood’s five bankable actresses, their earnings and what is possibly working for them.

Genevieve Nnaji

Topping the list of five is Genevieve Nnaji. Love or hate her, Genny as she is fondly called, has a way with cinema audiences that make them come back again and again for her movies.

So far, Genevieve’s starring in the movies has grossed over N83 million at the box office. Mirror Boy (described by the actress as her first major film and the first to put her at the box-office) made N18 million, while Ije netted N60 million turning out to be Nigeria’s highest grossing movie ever. But Genevieve had to share the money with Omotola, who also acted alongside her. If the sharing formula is 50-50, then Genevieve gets N30 million of the total gross.

Genevieve’s next movie, Tango with Me went on to make N35 million. So, putting all the figures together, Genny remains at the head of the pack. What seem to be working for Genevieve are her enduring power, popularity and social media connection. The actress has been there for over a decade and is still waxing stronger. Her wine seems to taste better with age.

Another plus for Genny is her popularity. Genevieve is hugely popular across Africa and most especially among the youths. Before now, she has been very active on the social media especially Twitter. She even had to put up a Facebook advert after reports emerged that some acts were ahead of her there.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

Next on the list is Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde with box-office gross of N60 million. She made N24 million with Last Flight to Abuja, N6 million from Private Storm and her N30 million share in Ije bring her total earning to N60 million.

This year alone, no actress has made as much as N24 million from a single movie; Funke Akindele would have done so with The Return of Jenifa but the movie hit the box office in 2011.

Omotola, who was reported to have been paid N5 million by Tarila Thompson all in the bid to make his movie a blockbuster, has been described as the biggest box office actress of 2012. She recorded successes back to back but it remains to be seen if she can pull off the box office magic again with Amina and other movies coming in 2013.

Omotola has been an A-list actress even before Genevieve got her first big break and so what has been working for her is the wise investment in her brand. Her enduring presence and unceasing contact with her fans via the social media has made her popular even in an environment where a mother of four like her is not fashionable.

Funke Akindele

Surprisingly, the third person on the list is Funke Akindele, a young lady who rose to fame in I Need To Know, a TV series, and went on to earn a monstrous fame with Jenifa.

Funke is an unlikely candidate on this list. Now, how can one explain that she is third on a list parading heavy weights like Omoni Oboli, Nse Ikpe-Etim and Stephanie Okereke among others?

So far, Funke has made over N56 million, netting over N20 million in 2012 alone. In The Return of Jenifa, Funke netted N35 million. The movie ran till February 2012. Her movie, Married but Living Single made N9.9 million while Maami made N11 million. The actress is on her way to another cinema glory with a movie, A Wish. Let’s hope she will be able to wave the magical wand again and create a box-office success.

For Funke who recently got married, the plus factor for her is her huge popularity among the masses and elites. Her movie, Jenifa cuts across all social groups with the street parlance in it becoming the mode of communication in social gathering. And as an icing on the cake, Funke has moved upscale, she is now the toast of events organized by the rich and not so rich. Her box office credibility transcends the cinema as all DVDs parading her face turn into gold.

Omoni Oboli

Omoni Oboli, who is still largely unknown to those who don’t patronise the cinema and social media, is fourth on the list. She is a silent achiever. Before the trio of Genevieve, Omotola and Funke even dreamt of hitting the box office, Omoni Oboli already took the lead. Figurine, her first box office appearance made N13 million while her second effort, Anchor Baby made N18 million bringing her total earning to N31million.

Omoni’s strength is her exclusivity and knack for quality. It is a known fact that if the project is not big and ambitious, Omoni might not do it. The disadvantage of that is, despite her box office credibility, Omoni is still unknown in areas where there is no access to cinemas. Perhaps, that is the reason she tries to make up with the red carpet presence.

For now, the exclusivity is working for Omoni; perhaps her new movie, Broken and other works will introduce a new twist. One other thing that should not be forgotten is the unprecedented publicity of Anchor Baby in 2010. The film also had Omoni at the forefront of meeting and greeting of fans at the cinemas.

Nse Ikpe-Etim

The fifth slot belongs to Nse Ikpe-Etim. She seems to be the latest sensation in big budget movies. In Mr and Mrs, Nse was a delight, her performance was a reference point and it was a hook that kept drawing people to the cinema while the movie was there.

Mr and Mrs made N6 million while another of her film, Phone Swap made N20 million, making a total of N26 million.

Too early for Nse to cement her place, as she hasn’t done N15 million back-to-back but one thing the actress has made clear is that she has intention of doing that. The leading four acts should be afraid of Nse because her strength lies in her pure acting talent.

Nse is born to act, deemed to be unnecessarily assertive a times, but you can’t accuse her of not knowing her lines. And she pushes her movies with virgour, moving from one cinema to the other.

However, Nse should watch it as many have accused her of being too ‘self-conscious’, a term casually used for budding stars who have ‘over-hyped’ impression of themselves as this could alienate fans who make the box-office count.

Rita Dominic and Stephanie Okereke

Rita Dominic and Stephanie Okereke should readily make the list but they haven’t appeared at the cinemas more than once. Hopefully, Rita will break into the list with The Meeting, Lion of 76 and Street of Calabar while Stephanie already had N10 million under her belt with Through the Glass.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rules. A bankable star makes easier the job of a producer; the absence of one, however, is not a ready-made doom for a movie as Avatar and Slumdog Millionaire (both global box office hits) have shown. But if one would take a risk or err, it’s better to err on the part of caution.

Uduaghan Nominates Dead Man For Board Appointment

Uduaghan Nominates Dead Man For Board Appointment

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan
By SaharaReporters, New York
Members of the Delta State House of Assembly were on Tuesday thrown into a state of astonishment when they discovered that one of the seven persons nominated by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan for appointment into the Delta State Tourism Board had died a while ago.
Last week, Mr. Uduaghan had included the name of James Youmu in a list of nominees for the state’s tourism board that was forwarded to the legislature for screening and confirmation. Mr. Youmu has been dead
The other nominees for the same board are Efe Afe, Peter Okolotu, Hyacinth Iyere, Amah Agbajoh, Abel Eyube and Joe Morg.
There was a mild drama during the screening when Mr. Youmu, the fourth nominee on the list, was called up. Mr. Afe, a former member of the state assembly who was screened as the chairman of the board, immediately told the House that the said James Youmu had died even before the names were sent for screening.
The embarrassing situation raised eyebrows among lawmakers. The strange incident became a new chapter in the governor’s controversial actions regarding the membership of the state-owned agencies and parastatals.
Last week, a prominent member of the Delta State House of Assembly had told SaharaReporters that he was dismayed that the governor sent a list of nominees for the boards of state-owned agencies after the governor had sworn in the nominees into office three months ago. The legislator said that the governor’s belated action was “evidence that Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has lost focus.”
Other legislators also told SaharaReporters that they were taken aback by the governor’s letter forwarded a letter with the names of nominees after he had inaugurated them, thereby violating the law. “Why did His Excellency send us names of nominees for state boards for screening and confirmation when the boards were inaugurated by the same governor some months ago?” one of the state lawmakers wondered.
Several of the legislators wondered why none of the governor’s aides had warned him against inaugurating boards without first forwarding the names of their members to the state assembly for vetting and approval, as demanded by law.
A letter titled “Request For Confirmation Of Nomination Of Chairmen And Members Of Certain Boards” and personally signed by Governor Uduaghan was accompanied with a list of nominees to be screened for appointment into the Delta State Tourism Board, Delta Broadcasting Service, Warri; Delta Broadcasting Service, Asaba, and Delta State Rural Development Agency.
The latest development, where a dead man’s name appeared on the governor’s list, caused consternation among Deltans who went to the state assembly to witness the screening and confirmation exercise. “Who come put dead man for board?” one of the spectators mused, speaking in pidgin language.

ASUU TO CALL OFF STRIKE OR FACE SACK

ASUU TO CALL OFF STRIKE OR FACE SACK

The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities on Tuesday called for the immediate re-opening of all shut down universities across the country.
This is contained in a communiqué signed by the committee’s Chairman, Prof. Kimse Okoko, released in Abuja on Tuesday.
The communiqué was issued at the end of the committee’s meeting to discuss the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other issues affecting the Nigerian University System.
It stated that the call for the re-opening of the universities was unanimously agreed by all Pro-chancellors in the interest of the country.
The communique directed all the Vice-Chancellors to comply with the decision.
It commended the efforts by the Federal Government to address the major issues that led to the strike and lauded the personal intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan in the resolution of the dispute.
It also expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the referendum conducted in all the branches of ASUU nationwide, which voted 60-40 in favour of the suspension of the ongoing strike.
The communique explained that the committee’s decision was based on the negative impact the strike had had on the university system, students and the parents.
It, however, appealed for the understanding from the leadership and members of ASUU to ensure speedy restoration of academic activities on campuses.

SENATOR SWEARS JUJU FOR THOSE THAT WILL COLLECT HIS GIFTS AND NOT VOTE FOR HIM

SENATOR SWEARS JUJU FOR THOSE THAT WILL COLLECT HIS GIFTS AND NOT VOTE FOR HIM

Senator representing Adamawa South Senatorial Zone, Alhaji Ahmed Barata has placed a curse on gifts and donations disbursed to members of his constituency in a bid to ensure all beneficiaries of his empowerment programme vote for him at the upcoming elections.

While making his donations, the senator made the stunning utterance, informing anybody who was a beneficiary of his gifts and still refused to vote for him in the forthcoming 2015 general election would be punished by God.

Irked by the statement, some members of his constituency were said to have shunned the empowerment package and quietly left the scene, while some vowed they would collect his gift but they would still not vote for him because his constituency had benefited nothing from him.

Others who took his curse with a pinch of salt said if God were to punish anybody, the senator would be first on His list.

Speaking to newsmen, some of the senator constituents who craved anonymity said the empowerment package distributed by the senator was a charade to give the impression that he was popular in the constituency which he had abandoned for a long time.

“The attempt by the senator to undertake this charade is to atone for the sins he committed against us, as he realises that 2015 is fast approaching, and the only way he could make his way back into reckoning was by offering us this Greek gift,” one his constituents said.

While disbursing the donations, which included grinding machines, sewing machines, hairdressing equipment, and local irrigation equipment for dry season farming, the senator said poverty must be reduced to the barest minimum to allow peace thrive in the area.

According to Barata, poverty is the root cause of all evil acts in the society ranging from the consumption of hard drugs to women and child trafficking and other forms of criminal vices.

He said in his quest to eradicate poverty, he had facilitated the employment of more than 35 graduates from all the nine local governments of his constituency as well as providing a computer centre in Jada and Numan Local Governments Areas.

TOP AREAS IN LAGOS WHERE RAPE CRIME IS MOST RAMPANT.

BEWARE: THESE AREAS OF LAGOS ARE RAPIST DEN:

Managing partner of the group, Itoro Eze-Anaba, said this in Lagos on Monday during the opening of the Marabel Centre – a séxual assault and referral centre – located at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
She said the purpose of establishing the centre was to provide assistance for rapé victims without divulging their secret.
She said, “From July to November 25, the centre has offered free services to 124 victims who have been rapéd or séxually assaulted in Lagos State. Our statistics show that majority of the survivors of rapé are children between the ages of 11-15.
“Children are more at risk of séxual assault in Oshodi/Mafoluku, Ikeja, Agege/Oko Oba, Mile 12/Ketu areas. The Mirabel Centre offers medical examination and treatment for illness and injuries caused by séxual assault. We counsel to help cope with emotional and psychological effects of rapé and help in reporting the incident to the police.”
Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof Wale Oke, added that the centre would increase access to Lagosians, whom, he said, suffer more from séxual assaults.
He said, “Victims of rapé or séxual assault may feel ashamed, angry, guilty, distressful and anxious. There may be a disbelief of what has happened to them, and hence they need to get back to their normal lives as quickly as possible.
“Whatever they feel is normal; they need back their lives and must be committed to restoring it. Women in Lagos have always been at the forefront of the liberation struggle, and we owe an immense debt of gratitude to women for the instrumental role they play in the polity.”
Chairman, Advisory Council, National Human Right Commission, Abuja, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, emphasised that those found guilty of séxual assaults should be punished.
“We must stop being silent and stop negotiating certain boundaries in the name of family name or friendship.  Defaulters of séxual assaults should be severely punished because we have to stop exposing our children and women to risk of rapé and other séxual assaults,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Felix Ogundeji, urged Lagosians not to hesitate to report rapé cases to the police before evidences became vague.
“There is no police station that you will report séxual assaults case to that won’t help you. All you need to do is to ensure that you contact them early so the evidences can be easily proven and justice can be well ascertained. You should know that good evidences are required to excel in a criminal case,” he added

Merger Throws PDP Into Minority At National Assembly

As 5 governors of the New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) defect to the All Progressive Party (APC), the leadership structure in both chambers of the National Assembly is set for a shake-up that will see the minority switching places with the majority.
As it currently stands, the APC members in the House of Representatives are 137(one hundred and thirty seven) in addition to the  57 (fifty seven )members who declared for the nPDP and would join their governors to defect to the APC. This means that 194 (one hundred and ninety four) members now belong to APC, pitching the PDP, now 166 in number,  in the minority.
With this development, the leadership of the House of Representatives may have to change since the opposition has now swelled with the defection to displace the majority of the House. It is pertinent to note that some lawmakers, especially those loyal to the governors of Niger and Jigawa States, 6 from Niger and 11from Jigawa States, may not join the APC since their chief executives have signified their intention to remain in the PDP.
In a phone chat with LEADERSHIP last night on how the change affects the colouration of the House, the deputy minority leader of the House Of Representatives, Hon Samson Osagie (APC, Edo) said it may be too early in the day to celebrate as the merger process has not been consummated but hailed the defection as “a good development for the polity”.
In the Senate, the PDP has 48 senators, nPDP 26 and  APC 29. Labour Party has 4 while APGA has 1. But with the current development, 21 out of the 26 have now joined the APC with their governors, increasing the number of the APC to 50 minus five from Niger and Jigawa States.
The threat on the leadership in the Senate also applies here since the majority PDP has now been relegated to a minority status.

Niger Delta activist, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari was arrested on Tuesday.

Security officials in Benin Republic have arrested Asari Dokubo, his lawyer, Festus Keyamo, said on Tuesday evening.
According to the information provided by Mr. Keyamo in a statement, the Rivers born former armed fighter was on Tuesday “arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, around the hours of 1:00pm and 2:00pm by the country’s gendarmes (Police Force).”
The wealthy former militant reportedly opened a private university in the Benin Republic, the King Amachree African University that is preparing to start degree-awarding programmes in 2014.
Keyamo stated,
“We want to emphasise that Alhaji Dokubo-Asari carries on legitimate business and has been living partly in Benin Republic for many years now”

“In fact, he owns houses, schools and an academy in that country. All these places have been searched as at this evening and nothing incriminating was found.”
He suggested that Dokubo’s arrest and detention may be a ploy by “certain forces in Nigeria in unholy alliance with the Beninoise government” to keep his client away as 2015 approaches.
Moreover, the lawyer added,
“We call on the Nigerian government to immediately intervene and ensure that no harm befalls Alhaji Dokubo-Asari and to use all diplomatic means to secure his immediate release and safe return to Nigeria,”
Dokubo has recently vowed that unless Mr. President Jonathan retains the presidency in 2015, Nigeria would break up

LAGBUS crushes Soldier to death in Lagos (WARNING: GRAPHIC PHOTO)

This horrible accident happened yesterday Monday Sept. 23rd along the Alaka/Costain crossover bridge in Surulere. The driver of one of the buses in the state mass transit scheme lost control of his bus and crashed into a soldier riding a motorcyle on the express. The yet-to-be identified soldier was cut almost into two by the bus. (Too graphic...but will show you just one pic).

According to a source who witnessed the accident, the driver was on top speed when he lost control of the vehicle as he approached a bad spot on the dilapidated bridge. The driver, while trying to avoid the bad spot, swerved to the left pinning the soldier on the railing of the bridge. The bus dragged the soldier for a bit and cut through his bowel.

Eyewitnesses said the soldier, who died on the spot, was carrying a woman on the back seat of the motorcycle, and was flung away from the impact of the collision. She survived the crash but is in a critical condition in the hospital. The driver of the bus fled the scene after seeing the extent of the damage and so did the passengers of the bus a few minutes later, fearing attack from soldiers.

See a pic after the cut. *Very graphic so be warned*:
