Ibeagwa-Aka (Enugu), May 14, 2013 (NAN) The Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday called on  the Federal Government and donor agencies to save five communities in Igboeze-South Local Government of the state from being cut-off by erosion.

Mr Donatus Uzogbado, Chairman of the assembly committee on environment, made the call  in Ibeagwa-Aka, the headquarters of council area, when he led members of the committee to inspect some of the erosion sites in the area.

According to him, communities along the Iheaka-Iheakpu-Awka-Ibeawga-Itchi-Unadu road as well as the Ibeagwa-Aka Girls’ Secondary School and the Divisional Police Station in the area would be cut-off from the rest of the council area if nothing urgent was done this year to save the affected areas.

He said that the three kilometre Uhunowerre-Enugu-Ezike road and the Orie- Igboeze road were also gradually being washed away by erosion.

``That’s why we want to compile this compendium of all the environmental impact problems in Enugu State. So we started in earnest and deemed it wise that your local government will be covered because this is one of the worst hit areas.

``I’m not trying to exaggerate facts but Igboeze South is one of the worst areas despite the fact that you people are trying your best. You have been attacking it.

``You have been doing a lot of things along the road  because almost all the road we went have been graded but you discover that erosion has been causing havoc along almost all of them.

``So your intervention has been seriously noticed in most of the road but the thing continues to persist. So that is why we are undertaking this tour.’’

He assured that the state and Federal Government as well as international donor agencies would come to the aid of the affected communities.

Responding, Mr Festus Ozioko, Chairman of the local government, said that due to its topography,  the area was prone to erosion menace but noted that he council was doing its best to tackle the problem within its limited resources.

Ozioko expressed the hope that visit of the team would provide a relief that would mitigate the impact of the ecological disaster in the area.

He urged the Nigeria Erosion Watershed Management Programme (NEWMAP) and other donor agencies to assist the affected communities.

The visiting team was conducted round the erosion sites by Mr Godwin Onah, the Supervisor for Works of the local government and the council’s Vice Chairman, Mrs Anthonia Ayogu. (NAN)
